Chios, Roads \\ Mesta walk
Chios island – Walking in the medieval town of Mesta. It is constructed following defence tactics used in many Greek islands. Narrow and dark, but spacious enough for a fully loaded horse and rider, the streets give the illusion of a dead end or dead ends and the same time the illusion of an actual passage, resulting to the confusion of the invaders, while giving the advantage to locals to hide. Domed arches over narrow streets counter-support the houses’ vaulted ceilings, and they function as bridges connecting the roofs; they also work as air ducts, creating draught for proper ventilation of the fortress.
